My name is
Darryl Boyd and this is the history of both this event and my family history
with Classic Cars and Hot Rods.
I am a Redondo Beach
Real Estate Agent and was born in Los Angeles and raised in the South Bay. My idea
for this event was to try and recapture some of the spirit and nostalgia that I remembered during my High
School cruising days from the late 1970's to early 1980's on Redondo Beach's
Harbor Drive. I can recall that Friday and Saturday nights during this time period
would see Harbor Drive and Hermosa Avenue backed up and bumper to bumper with
Street Machines, Hot Rod's, and other custom cars as well as crowds of teenagers
and young people just hanging out and looking for a good
time. Hot Rods also run in the Boyd family blood, and this
was a major inspiration for me in starting this event. My Grandfather, Glen
Sr. raced Track T Roadsters in the 1920's with his brother Leo. My Dad, Glen Jr. built his own Hot Rods in the 1950's.
I built my first car, a 19701/2 Chevy
Camaro during my high school days with my Dad's help and support. I also owned a 1973 Chevy Camaro Z-28
a few years after high school, again with my Dad's help and support. Cars are a definite part of the Boyd family heritage and something
that has been a bond between father and son for 3 generations.
Glen Sr. passed away on Feb. 25, 2002 at the age of 94
years old. He owned a black 1927 Ford Model T Roadster that was specially built for
him as a gift in 1983 from his son and my Dad Glen Boyd Jr. Glen Jr. passed away on Jan. 4, 2002
at the age of 69 years old and owned a red 1933 Ford Coupe that was built at the same time
in 1983. Both cars were built by California Street Rods in Huntington Beach.
Many memorable years were shared with the entire Boyd family and both of the
Street Rods. My Mom will especially miss the many Rod Runs and memories that she
shared with my Dad, Grandpa, and their close friends. Both of these vehicles
will be on display at Ruby's throughout this years cruise nights.
I currently own a black 1969 Chevy Corvette
Stingray that I have had for about 20 years and it was restored 8 years ago.
Dad was a total Ford man and always gave me a hard time about owning Chevy's for
as long as I have owned them. Of course it was all in a kidding way, but I can still hear the
echoes of him ribbing me about being a Chevy man. But I always loved the awesome
Ford cars that he owned while still standing my Chevy ground. So I will
pay tribute to him and Grandpa the best way that I can by sharing these cars
with all of you on Friday nights. And of course remembering the many good times
and memories that they represent to my family.
In January of 1984 all 3 of the Boyd's and the
'33 Ford Coupe,'27 Ford Model T Roadster, and my first car, the 70 1/2 Chevy Camaro were
featured on the cover
of Street Rodder Magazine. Also included was a three generation article on
the family, with some interesting recollections from Grandpa Glen Sr.'s racing
days. Grandpa was also affectionately known to his family and close friends as
"Pop". The license plate "Pop's 27 T" will forever remain on
his car, as well as "Boyd's '33" on my Dad's 1933 Ford 3 Window
Coupe. The Boyd's made a re-appearance in Street Rodder Magazine's January 2004
issue with a 20 year retrospective. In February 2004 The '33 Ford Coupe and '69
Corvette were featured on the cover of the largest auto mechanics magazine in
Japan.

The kick off for the first "Cruise At The Beach!"
was July 28, 2000. There was
a turn out of between 125-150 Classic cars, Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Street
Machines, and other pre 1975 American made cars. A huge crowd of spectators was
also on hand to enjoy the cars and festive atmosphere at Ruby's Diner in the
Redondo Beach Marina. Local press was also on hand to cover the
event.
Today's "Cruise At The
Beach!" offers more of a family setting with plenty to do in the
Redondo Beach Harbor and Marina area. Here you will see some of the finest
American made Classic Cars, Street Machines, and Hot Rods. You can also enjoy a
burger, fries, and Coke at Ruby's, or take a walk on the Redondo Beach Pier and
browse the shops or listen to some live music on the pier. It's a great time for
everyone!
